Background of the Study
Health promotion campaigns are essential for increasing public awareness and encouraging behavioral changes that prevent chronic diseases. In Ekiti State, Nigeria, hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality. Health promotion initiatives, including media campaigns, community workshops, and school-based programs, aim to educate the public on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular blood pressure screening, and adherence to treatment protocols (Olayinka, 2023). These campaigns are designed to empower individuals with knowledge about the risks associated with high blood pressure and to motivate them to adopt preventive measures such as physical activity, dietary modifications, and stress management. Evidence indicates that well-implemented health promotion campaigns can lead to significant reductions in the incidence of hypertension and its complications. However, challenges such as limited reach, cultural barriers, and inadequate resources may hinder the full impact of these interventions. This study aims to evaluate the effect of health promotion campaigns on reducing hypertension incidence in Ekiti State, thereby informing the design of more effective public health strategies (Adebayo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing health promotion campaigns in Ekiti State, hypertension remains a major public health issue, with high incidence and associated complications. Many individuals continue to experience elevated blood pressure due to a lack of awareness, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and limited access to preventive services. The effectiveness of current health promotion initiatives is often compromised by low community engagement, cultural resistance, and insufficient funding. As a result, the desired reduction in hypertension rates has not been fully realized, leading to a continued burden on the healthcare system and increased cardiovascular risk among the population. The absence of comprehensive evaluation data on these campaigns makes it difficult for policymakers to determine their efficacy and to identify areas for improvement. Addressing these gaps is critical for developing targeted interventions that can more effectively reduce hypertension incidence in Ekiti State (Chukwuma, 2023).
